Blue Jays eliminate Yankees; Phillies, Cubs and Tigers keep their seasons alive

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer each drove in a run, and eight Toronto pitchers shut down the New York Yankees in a 5-2 victory Wednesday night that sent the Blue Jays to the American League Championship Series for the first time in nine years. Nathan Lukes provided a two-run single and Addison Barger had three of Toronto’s 12 hits as the pesky Blue Jays, fouling off tough pitches and consistently putting the ball in play, bounced right back after blowing a five-run lead in Tuesday night’s loss at Yankee Stadium. AL East champion Toronto took the best-of-five Division Series 3-1 and will host Game 1 in the best-of-seven ALCS on Sunday against the Detroit Tigers or Seattle Mariners.

Leon Draisaitl scores his 400th NHL goal in the Oilers' opener against the Flames

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Leon Draisaitl scored his 400th NHL goal Wednesday night in the Edmonton Oilers' regular-season opener against the Calgary Flames.

Playing his 791st regular-season game, Draisaitl gave the Oilers a 3-0 lead at 8:32 of the second period. He tapped in David Tomasek’s cross-crease feed, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also assisting.

Draisaitl also had an assist to push his points total to 958. The 29-year-old German star is the 111th player in NHL history to score 400 goals.

Edmonton led 3-2 after two periods.

Ethan Vasko threw for 243 yards and ran for a touchdown in Liberty's 19-8 win over UTEP

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Ethan Vasko threw for 243 yards and ran for a touchdown, Eldric Griffin made an interception with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter, and Liberty beat UTEP 19-8 on Wednesday night.

Jay Billingsley made a 41-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, to give Liberty a 19-0 lead midway through the third quarter. He missed a 43-yarder late in the fourth, but Griffin sealed the victory with an interception four plays later.

Liberty (2-4, 1-1 Conference USA) outgained UTEP 404-167. The Flames rushed for 160 yards on 50 carries, led by Vaughn Blue’s 75 yards. Vasko was 19-of-33 passing.

Skyler Locklear was intercepted twice for UTEP (1-5, 0-2).

Jiquavious Marshall ended the first half by intercepting a pass over the middle near the end zone and going 70 yards the other way before getting taken down.

The Miners only had three first downs and 66 yards in the first half.
