2017 Hockey Hall of Fame class to be named Monday; Selanne + who?

The 2017 Hockey Hall of Fame class is expected to be announced on Monday, and every indication is that Teemu Selanne will be on the list. Beyond that, well, there are a lot of question marks. NHL.com notes that there’s at least a possibility that Selanne will be the only NHL name to be part of this class, which would mark a first since 2010 (when Dino Ciccarelli was the lone addition).... Pirri, Clendening and Skapski not given qualifying offers

3:20PM: Asked about the coaching changes, Jeff Gorton said "As far as Jeff Beukeboom, we met with Jeff and we agreed on both sides to offer him another job. He wanted to do something else so we are going to put him in another role, yet to be defined, but definitely part of the Rangers going forward. As far as his replacement, that is ongoing and we are trying to figure that out. I know... Read more

How the Brandon Saad trade will affect Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane

Maybe it was correlation or maybe it was coincidence, but Jonathan Toews' production the last two seasons during 5-on-5 play was below his lofty standards without Brandon Saad playing on his left side. Outside of a monthlong period last season in which he played with Nick Schmaltz and Richard Panik as his wings, Toews had a rotating cast of linemates. Over the last two years, it seemed as if coach Joel Quenneville gave every forward... Read more

Predators won’t trade defense for forward help

After losing James Neal to the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft this past week the Nashville Predators have a pretty glaring hole in their top-six that is going to need to be addressed. Along with that, captain Mike Fisher is an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and is also considering retirement. Because of those two developments general manager David Poile has made adding a top-six forward a priority for this summer, and... Read more

The 10 most awkward 2017 NHL Draft rookie photos

It’s once again time for that Puck Daddy tradition, “The 10 Most Awkward NHL Draft Rookie Photos,” and surprisingly many of them don’t involve a tiny ‘lil Gary Bettman at a big ‘ol podium. The 2017 NHL Draft, sadly, has followed in the recent tradition of not posing these young men with their sticks raised or with some weird lighting or other photo booth accouterment. Here are some from the NHL Draft in Chicago.... Read more

NHL teams can begin talking to pending free agents today

Obviously no contracts can be signed until July 1, and technically there is to be no discussion of contract terms, but the window is open for discussions to begin. T.J. Oshie re-signing with the Washington Capitals on Friday already removed one of the big-ticket players from the market. Shattenkirk is probably the top free agent available on the market and headlines a weak group of defensemen.... Read more

Quick Hits: Which Free Agents Should Red Wings Target?

No rest for the weary. The draft is not even 24 hours old and we’re already moving forward towards free agency. It makes no sense for the Wings to shell out the money it would take to secure Kevin Shattenkirk, the marquee defenseman expected to be available. Would he help them? Yes. Would he transform them into contenders? No. The Wings can’t do it anyway because salary space is an issue. They have about $8... Read more

Let’s talk about why the Penguins traded for Ryan Reaves

Normally teams swapping fourth-liners and 20 draft spots wouldn’t be the type of move that would move the needle or send any sort of a ripple through the NHL. This is the Pittsburgh Penguins — the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions — ever so slightly deviating from the path that made them the best team in hockey the past two seasons. Rutherford was critical of the way superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were treated during... Read more

Report: Randy Sexton to become Sabres’ assistant GM

New general manager Jason Botterill continued his restructuring of the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday by hiring one of his former co-workers from Pittsburgh. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Penguins director of amateur scouting Randy Sexton will be joining the Sabres to serve as their assistant general manager and also the general manager for their AHL team, the Rochester Americans. Sexton has seemingly been at top of Botterill’s list since he left the Penguins front office... Read more

The Red Wings drafted Mass. native John Adams, and hockey fans had all the obvious jokes

The second round of the NHL Draft kicked off Saturday morning in Chicago, and in the sixth round of seven, the Detroit Red Wings grabbed a winger named John Adams as the 162nd overall pick. Although he appears to go by Jack, is from a city about 40 minutes north of Boston, according to eliteprospects.com, and is obviously not that John Adams — the second president of the U.S. — hockey fans did not disappoint with... Los Angeles Kings prospect raised by two mothers

CHICAGO (AP) — Moments after Jaret Anderson-Dolan was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, he hugged his mothers Fran and Nancy. They cried a few tears as Anderson-Dolan made his way to the floor of the United Center for handshakes and congratulations from his new team. It was a slight variation on a familiar picture at the NHL draft. And just another Saturday for the 17-year-old center, who was raised by two women. "Obviously I... Read more

CHICAGO Ilya Kovalchuk is still reportedly mulling over a return to the NHL, four years after he surprisingly walked away from a monstrous contract with the New Jersey Devils to play in the KHL. CHICAGO – As opening nights go at the NHL Draft, Friday night was a bit of a ho-hum affair for the Boston Bruins at the United Center home of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Bruins went the safe route by drafting a smooth, defensive-minded defenseman with the 18th overall pick when they selected Finnish product Urho Vaakenainen, and in doing so left more dynamic forwards like Kristian Vesalainen and Kailer Yamamoto still on the draft board for other teams...
