Football could turn into futbol at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field this summer. The  Dallas Morning News is reporting that the venue is on the short list to host English Premier League giants Manchester United and Manchester City for a stateside derby on July 20th this summer. “We firmly believe Texas A&M is a world-class university, so you’re bringing world-class Premier League soccer teams to the campus,” Aggies senior associate athletic director Kevin Hurley told the paper.... Bear Bryant’s great-grandson picks up offer from SEC school not named Alabama

When you think of legendary head coach  Bear Bryant , the Alabama Crimson Tide typically comes to mind. After all, that’s where he solidified his status on the Mount Rushmore of college football and had the most success of any coach not named  Nick Saban. Some outside the South may not realize it though, but Bryant really developed his reputation running a football team at another SEC and only some fans would be able to... Read more

One Nebraska offensive lineman transferring to Kansas, another set for Texas Tech

Spring practice has wrapped up at Nebraska and a pair of offensive lineman are on their way out of the program for greener pastures in the Cornhuskers old home of the Big 12.   First up on the moving van is offensive lineman  Zach Hannon,  who announced on Thursday he will transfer to Kansas. The Kansas City native is a graduate transfer so he should be able to play right away with the Jayhawks. He’s not the only offensive... Read more

Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson frowns upon Group of Five playoff idea

The chances a team from the Group of Five ever gets selected to play in the College Football Playoff range from slim to none. As such, talk from within the Group of Five has kicked up from time to time, especially over the last year, about a possible Group of Five-only version of the College Football Playoff. The reactions to that idea has been mixed, but add Sun Belt Conference commissioner... Read more

Nick Saban, on QB controversy: ‘there isn’t one’

Consider The Nicktator perturbed.  Again. Jalen Hurts  ( pictured, right ) helped lead Alabama to the national championship game as a true freshman last season and is seemingly the Crimson Tide’s unquestioned starter as we trudge toward summer.  Five-star 2017 signee Tua Tagovailoa ( pictured, left ), however, had an impressive first spring in Tuscaloosa, capped off with an excellent showing in the annual A-Day game this past weekend. The true freshman passed for 315... Read more

LOOK: Jim Harbaugh hooks Pope Francis up with Michigan helmet, pair of Jordans

There’s a series of words I’d never imagined I’d string together in a headline. As you may have heard, Jim Harbaugh has taken his Michigan football team to Italy for an offseason European vacation.  As part of the trip, the team is in the Vatican City today and took in the Pope’s Wednesday address to the masses in St. Peter’s Square — the players and athletic director Warde Manuel sat amongst the crowd while the... Tulane turns to Jonathan Banks as starter at QB

Last season, there was just one FBS team — Army and its triple-option (967) — that passed for fewer yards than Tulane’s 1,360.  Tulane’s team passing efficiency rating of 93.12 was 128th of the 128 teams at this level of football.  Their completion percentage of 42.2 was, again, 128th in the FBS.  Their 5.3 yards per attempt was… 127th. This season, the Green Wave’s passing hopes in a run-heavy offense will likely land on the... Read more

Drew O’Bryan leaves Western Kentucky, drops down to FCS level

Another day, another FBS player has transitioned away from his first college football home. On his personal Twitter account recently, Drew O’Bryan acknowledged his decision to transfer from Western Kentucky. Additionally, he announced his next destination for good measure — Eastern Kentucky. The linebacker said he made the decision “[a]fter talking with my family and many prayers.” As EKU plays at the Football Championship Subdivision level, O’Bryan will be eligible to play immediately for the... Pair of Alabama defenders undergo surgery after Tide’s spring game

Alabama’s spring game wrapped up on Saturday and with it, the last of the Crimson Tide’s spring practices. While that means the coaching staff is free to fly across the country to visit recruits during the evaluation period, it also results in several players going under the knife to correct injuries in order to be back by fall camp. Two of those players are starting cornerback  Anthony Averett  and (likely starting) linebacker  Christian Miller,  both... Read more

SEC commissioner hints at review of rules regarding alcohol sales in football stadiums

The prohibition of alcohol at football stadiums has undergone one interesting about-face in college athletics the past 15 years or so. While various suite levels at stadiums across the country have generally had access to a few adult beverages, there’s been some very large programs that have opened up the taps in the general seating areas the last few years. From West Virginia to Texas to Ohio State, more and more programs are selling beer and/or liquor across the board... Read more
